EU invites Canada to be its first associate member
EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said Wednesday she wants Canada to become the bloc’s first “associate member.” Canada’s trade deal with the EU dropped tariffs on 99% of goods; she wants closer ties on defense, energy and technology. Canada’s trade talks with the US collapsed last month. She says it is not a partnership against anyone.
The countries of Europe have a club called the European Union. Its leader said she wants Canada to join, even though Canada is across the ocean. It’s like a kid from another school being invited onto your team. Canada stays right where it is, and the grown-ups are working out the rules.
Why it worksAn invitation to join a team is something a six-year-old already gets. Nobody has to move.
- “Is Canada moving to Europe?”
- No. Canada stays right where it is. The club is about trading things and working together, not about moving.

The US put big tariffs on Canadian goods, and talks to fix it collapsed last month. So on Wednesday the head of the EU offered to make Canada its first “associate member.” Like switching stores when the old one keeps raising prices.
Why it worksTariff, lost customer, new partner. A chain they can follow.
- “What is an associate member?”
- Nobody has spelled it out yet. It would go beyond Canada’s trade deal with the EU, which already dropped tariffs on 99% of goods.
- “Why does Canada want this?”
- The US is its biggest customer and put 50% tariffs on it. Canada’s exports to the US fell last year while exports everywhere else jumped.

Should countries pick friends by values or by the map? Canada got invited into Europe’s club, an ocean away. Von der Leyen says it is “not a partnership against anyone else.” Do you buy that, and would Washington?
Why it worksLet them decide whether it is a snub before you do.
- “Should countries pick friends by values or by the map?”
- Von der Leyen says the EU and Canada “see the world with the same eyes.” It would turn a club defined by geography into one defined by values.
- “Is this aimed at Trump?”
- She never said his name and called it “not a partnership against anyone else.” Trump has called Canada the 51st state and put 50% tariffs on it.

Do you pick friends by who lives nearby or who thinks like you?
Ask it at any age. Anyone can answer it, including the ones who didn’t read the news.
