Four acts quit Ed Sheeran’s tour over Macklemore

Macklemore was dropped from Ed Sheeran’s stadium tour after saying “Free Palestine” onstage in New Jersey. Sheeran says the promoter made that call, not him. On Tuesday four supporting acts, including Finneas, quit in solidarity with the rapper. Patriots owner Robert Kraft says he barred Macklemore from his stadium over the comments.

Bring it up if it fits the day

A rapper named Macklemore was taken off Ed Sheeran’s concerts after he spoke about a war during a show. Four of the other singers quit too, to stick up for him. It’s like leaving a game because a friend got sent off. Nobody is hurt, and the grown-ups are sorting it out.

Why it worksSticking up for a friend is something a five-year-old already understands. The war stays offstage.

They might ask
“Why did they take him off the show?”
He said things about a war that upset some people, and the stadium owners didn’t want him to. His friends thought that was unfair.

Good one to bring up

Macklemore said “Free Palestine” at Ed Sheeran’s show in New Jersey. Some stadiums said they wouldn’t let him play, so the promoter dropped him. Sheeran says it wasn’t his call. Then four opening acts quit, like teammates walking off when a friend gets benched.

Why it worksOne speech, a ban, a walkout. Kids this age argue fairness all day.

They might ask
“Who kicked Macklemore off the tour?”
The promoter, after stadium owners said they wouldn’t let him play. Patriots owner Robert Kraft says he barred him from his stadium.
“Why didn’t Ed Sheeran stop it?”
He says he talked to the venues all week, but the promoter’s decision was final. He says his shows aren’t a place for politics.

Ask first, then talk

Is staying out of it picking a side? Ed Sheeran says his shows aren’t a political forum and he is “not complicit.” Macklemore says there is no neutral position. Four acts walked. Which one do you buy, and what did it cost each of them?

Why it worksLet them make Sheeran’s case before you do.

They might ask
“Is staying out of it picking a side?”
Macklemore says there’s no neutral position. Sheeran says he has views but won’t use his stage for them. Four opening acts sided with Macklemore.
“Can a stadium owner just ban a performer?”
Kraft did. Venues told the promoter they wouldn’t allow Macklemore, and the promoter said the whole tour was at risk.

The dinner table question

If a friend gets kicked out for speaking up, do you walk out too?

Ask it at any age. Anyone can answer it, including the ones who didn’t read the news.
