Milwaukee won the World Series. Its first, after 57 years.

The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 on Wednesday. It is the first World Series title in the franchise’s 57-year history. William Contreras was the series MVP: he hit .381 and got 10 umpire calls overturned on challenge. Manager Pat Murphy is 67. The Rays have now lost all three World Series they have reached.

Good one to bring up

A baseball team from Milwaukee called the Brewers won the biggest prize in baseball on Wednesday. They had tried for 57 years, longer than most mums and dads have been alive, and never won it before. Their best hitter, William Contreras, got 10 umpire calls changed by asking for a second look. Some things take a long time, and then they happen.

Why it worksA six-year-old takes one vivid feature for the whole event, so the script gives them one: a team that tried for 57 years and finally won. Fifty-seven means nothing to them on its own, so it is measured against the grown-ups at the table. Expect “who did they beat?” The Rays, who have now lost all three World Series they played in.

They might ask
“What’s a World Series?”
The last big contest of the baseball year. Two teams play until one has won four games. The Brewers got to four first.

Good one to bring up

The Brewers beat the Rays 4-1 in Game 5 on Wednesday, their first World Series title in 57 years. William Contreras was the MVP: he hit .381 and got 10 umpire calls overturned by challenging them. A challenge is instant replay you ask for: say the call was wrong, and a tracking system checks.

Why it worksThis age is working out rules and whether adults apply them fairly, so the script lands on the challenge system: a player who thinks the umpire got it wrong asks, and a machine checks. Contreras asked and the call flipped ten times. Expect “can the umpire be wrong that often?” Umpires are people. That is why the challenge is there.

They might ask
“What’s a challenge?”
A player asks for a check on a pitch. A machine decides.
“Why did it take 57 years?”
Lots of teams, one trophy a year. Fifty-seven tries, one win.

Ask first, then talk

Is a win sweeter after 57 years? The Brewers had never won the World Series, and on Wednesday they beat the Rays 4-1 in Game 5. Their manager, Pat Murphy, is 67. Second: the Rays have now lost all three World Series they reached. Is that worse than never getting there?

Why it worksA teenager can hold two true things at once: a title is sweeter after 57 years, and three lost finals might be worse than none. The script asks them to weigh the wait against the loss, and they will test whether you argue it honestly. Expect “would you rather lose the final or never reach it?” Pick one and say why.

They might ask
“Is a win sweeter after 57 years?”
Yes. Some fans waited their whole lives for it.
“Is losing three finals worse than never getting there?”
Only two other teams ever lost their first three. Decide which hurts more.
