Comey’s daughter was fired illegally, a judge rules.

Maurene Comey prosecuted Epstein, Maxwell and Combs in New York for a decade with top marks. The Justice Department fired her in July 2025 and she sued, saying it was for her father’s name. Judge Jesse Furman ruled Monday that the firing broke the Constitution and ordered back pay to December 20. The department will appeal.

Bring it up if it fits the day

A lawyer named Maurene Comey had her job taken away last year, and she said that wasn’t fair. A judge checked the rules, the way a referee checks the rulebook, and said the people who fired her broke them. So they have to pay her for the months she lost. The grown-ups have it.

Why it worksA child this age reasons from what is in front of them, so the script gives one lost job and one referee checking the book, not the Constitution. The back pay is the concrete part: the rules held and she got what she was owed. Expect “does she get her job back?” She has a new one now. The judge gave her the pay instead.

They might ask
“Can your dad get you fired?”
Not like that. The judge said a boss can fire a prosecutor only for certain reasons, and this wasn’t one of them.

Good one to bring up

Maurene Comey was a New York prosecutor for ten years. In July 2025 the Justice Department fired her, saying only it “came from Washington”. She sued. A judge ruled Monday that a prosecutor can be fired only for set reasons, like a referee who needs a foul in the book.

Why it worksAt this age a child is testing whether adults apply the rules the same way every time, so the script runs the chain: ten years, top marks, fired with no reason, a lawsuit, a judge with the rulebook. The referee is the mechanism. Expect “so why did they really fire her?” Nobody official has said. She says it was her father.

They might ask
“Why did they fire her?”
They never told her. She says it was her father, James Comey, who Trump wants jailed.
“Does she get her job back?”
She has a new job. The judge gave her pay to December 20 instead.

Ask first, then talk

Can a president fire any prosecutor he likes? The government said yes: prosecutors use his power, so Congress can’t limit it. Judge Furman said that defies “nearly two centuries of Supreme Court precedent”. Second: the DOJ will appeal, and has fired scores who worked on Trump cases. Who settles it?

Why it worksA teenager can reason about an argument that is not in front of them: the government’s claim that a prosecutor wields the president’s own power, against the judge’s two centuries of precedent. The script hands them both and asks who settles it, with an appeal coming. Expect “will the appeal win?” I don’t know.

They might ask
“Why does the DOJ say it can fire anyone?”
It says they wield the president’s own power, so Congress can’t limit it.
“Is this really about her dad?”
She says so. Trump fired James Comey in 2017 and twice had him charged.

The dinner table question

Based on the headline: Comey’s daughter was fired illegally, a judge rules.

Should a boss have to give a reason before firing someone?
